Sara D’Angelo

Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitator and Somatic Practitioner (TCTSY-F)

Sara is ONE of 800 Worldwide Certified TCTSY-F (Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga Facilitators). Sara is naturally compassionate, sensitive and exudes peace and calm. Throughout her career in public education, Sara has witnessed the impact Trauma has on children (and their families): their learning, behaviours and responses to the world, all, which left unresolved, could continue into adulthood. These observations re-ignited Sara’s innate desire to do and help more. This led Sara to research how else to be of better service, and she came to discover a program at the Center for Trauma & Embodiment at JRI, in Massachusetts—the world’s first and only scientifically yoga-based intervention for complex trauma and PTSD. Feeling connected to its theory and empirically based practice, Sara decided to become certified as a trauma informed yoga facilitator herself.  Her formal studies include but are not limited to hundreds of hours of neuroscience, trauma theory, attachment theory, neurobiology, intersectionality, TCTSY methodology and so on.

TCTSY Facilitators are required to adhere to a code of ethics (“Ways of Being”) and renew their commitment to such standards of practice as well accreditation through continuing education hours on an annual basis. Sara helps to restore the nervous system that has been affected by Trauma. Trauma, in simplest terms, is a state of being completely and chronically overwhelmed with no one to help you, protect you or guide you through it, basically leaving you to respond to the event(s) on your own. This often internalizes as unworthiness, unresolved chaos, perceived constant threats/dangers and helplessness.  Trauma sends signals to the nervous system which alters how you view the world, seeing it as unsafe and leaving one to believe that you cannot rely on others to help and support you. The nervous system is left to act in overdrive in a constant fight or flight or fawn mode (a psychological defense mechanism to avoid harm, by pleasing, appeasing, submitting and being compliant to prevent criticism and abandonment), drowning you in feelings of fear, survival and anxiety. If you think about it, in some way or another, we may all have experienced some form of Trauma which we may still be holding on to in different parts of our bodies.  Most people who visit Sara (children and adults) have tried talk therapy and/or medication yet still feel a disconnect to self and others. A TCTSY session with Sara is private and confidential, prioritizing your feelings of safety and comfort and focusing on your choice making as the primary practice, (since Trauma happens in the absence of choice).  She may invite you to explore movements, patterns, breath, allow time for interoception, offer props, gemstones, and whatever else you may choose feels right for you.  Trauma Sensitive Yoga is used to help restore and regulate your nervous system, release tension, and rediscover calm, allowing you to feel empowered and safe in your body again. Sara is HUMBLED about accompanying and empowering you on your healing journey.
